Part 2. Future of .NET.

In this video, we will discuss a couple of concerns of .NET Professionals.
1. Is .NET Core is the future of .NET Developers?
2. Will .NET Survive against other open source technologies like JAVA, PHP, Python, Node, etc.

In this video, we will try to address to most concerned questions of dot net developers, the developers who are already having experience in this platform.

First, is .NET Core is going to be the future of dot net developers. Second will .NET survive against other open-source technologies, giants like Java, PHP Python, Node, etc. And before moving forward, I would like to add the disclaimer that these will be my personal views and I would really appreciate your discretion in the matter. Let me take you to the development block of Microsoft.

And this blog is written by Scott stating .NET Core is the future of dot net. But wait, who is Scott? Scott Hunter is the director of program management of Dot Net, and he has written this block almost one and a half years back on May 6th, 2019. This is the time when Netcode 3.0 RC was in progress, just in case, if you're not aware of what RC, GA, and LTS are all about. So these are the terminologies used in software development.

When we say RC means release candidate, very basic. When we say, GA, that means general availability. When we say LTS, that means long term support. In this blog, Scott has described a brief journey of .NET Core and also described a future plan of Microsoft and dot net, I will share the link in the description. Let me take you directly to the summary. So here, new applications should be built on .NET Core. Pretty clear message.

All right. So dot net core is where future investments in dot net will happen. Existing applications are safe to remain on the dot net framework, which will be supported by existing applications that want to take advantage of new features. And dot net should consider moving to .NET Core - a big statement. As we plan into the future, we will be bringing in even more capabilities to the platform.

I guess these four lines of summary, a very strong statement not only to the outside world but also to the software developer and the .NET developer community, that this is a very high time to move on to .NET Core. But wait, let me take you to the other block written by Richard Landal, and that block is also written on May 6th to 019. But who is Richard Lendell? Richard Lenda is the program manager of the .NET Team. So the title of this blog is introducing Dot Net five.

Previously we had two versions of .NET. One is called .NET framework and another one is called .NET Core.
But now we have a single version with the power of both.
You can write your code in C# and that will work across platforms.
Not all apps are available in .NET5 and that's when .NET6 comes into a picture.
With the upcoming .NET, we are expecting your same code to work across platform, even for Windows Form and all missing apps in .NET5.

Let's get back to Richard Block, so there will be just one .NET going forward and you will be able to use it to target Windows, Linux, Mac OS, iOS, Android Device OS, watchOS, Web assembly, and more. Finally, we have a Microsoft framework, which is cross-platform.

Expand the capabilities of .NET by taking the best of .NET Core, .NET Framework, Xamarin, and Mono.

Xamarin is an open-source platform from Microsoft for building modern and performant iOS and Android apps with C# and .NET. With the help of C# and .NET, the code is written in this language and this platform will work on iOS and Android apps as well.

Mono is a software platform designed to allow developers to easily create cross platform applications part of the .NET Foundation.

Sponsored by Microsoft, Mono is an open source implementation of Microsoft's .NET Framework based on the ECMA standards for C# and the Common Language Runtime. A growing family of solutions and an active and enthusiastic contributing community is helping position Mono to become the leading choice for the development of cross-platform applications.

So these blocks and these statements look fairly promising, but these blocks and these statements are from Microsoft people. Let's see what's the world has to say about it.

And this is the most shocking result for me, that ASP .NET Core topped the list of a most loved web framework,
