Passing through the Soo Locks, Aug 2018
The NOAA Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory's Lake Michigan Field Station, based in Muskegon, Michigan, is the home port for NOAA Great Lakes vessels which operate throughout the Great Lakes. Throughout the field season, vessels are deployed in support of wide a variety of science missions.
On August 8, 2018, GLERL vessel R-5503 passed through the Soo Locks on it's way to Lake Superior.
The team then headed to Whitefish Bay to deploy moorings that measure lake water temperatures, to release drifters to study Lake Superior currents, and to measure a variety of water characteristics to help validate satellite measurements. These observations provide key data in support of critical needs in the Great Lakes such as maritime navigation and commerce, search and rescue operations, beach management and safe recreation.
