Heart Failure: Comorbidities

This CCS Guideline video focuses on the management of 4 comorbidities: atrial fibrillation (2:01), diabetes (5:36), anemia (9:12), and cardiorenal syndrome (12:07).

In patients with heart failure, comorbidity is the rule, not the exception. The increased complexity of patients and their comorbidities often confound treatment. Comorbid conditions become risk factors for future worsening and might contribute to clinical deterioration, complicate management, and are often associated with poor prognosis.

Identification of comorbidities, communication with other healthcare providers, regular follow-up and monitoring, and being flexible with respect to the treatment plan are all critical factors to the successful management of patients with heart failure and comorbidities.
