Orco Feglino: Site of Supernatural Madonna Manifestations in 1874 (Read Description). Italy

The sanctuary was erected by popular will, following the apparitions of the Virgin which occurred from 12 May to 25 October 1874. The first apparition occurred on 12 May 1874 to a shepherdess: 12-year-old Angela Berruti. The Virgin appeared with Baby Jesus in her arms, a dark brown dress and a veil on her head. Later she also appeared to other local inhabitants: Vincenzo Scosceria aged 13, Maddalena Olivieri, Teresa Burnengo aged 36, Maria Valle aged 13 and to one of her friends. Sometimes the Madonna manifested herself with clothes of a color other than dark brown: white and blue with a crown on her head on one occasion, black on another and finally a light blue dress with a star on the chest. In this last apparition, Mary presented herself as the Immaculate Conception and was accompanied by Saint Clare and Saint Elizabeth . The authorities were very severe in repressing the immediate religious fervor, so much so that on the following 10 June they destroyed a small improvised chapel promptly erected by the population on the site of the apparitions. This did not prevent the spontaneous formation of a committee which took care of having the current sanctuary built in just 3 years based on a project by the architect Cassinis of Savona.

Angela Berruti, who later joined the Daughters of Our Lady of Mercy , founded by Saint Maria Giuseppa Rossello , died in Ruta di Camogli on 27 December 1943.
