Inground Sprinkler Valve Not Shutting Off, Diagnosis & Repair

Originally recorded May 9, 2018.

The oil spill house had a problem with the inground sprinklers, where one of the zone valves wasn't shutting off completely, and water was bubbling up out of the lowest head, at all times. In the interim, the main supply valve was shut off to prevent wasting water.

xjoe81x and I went over there, diagnosed the problem (from the very vague description), and fixed it, using nothing more than simple hand tools. Turns out there was some junk stuck in the valve assembly that prevented the diaphragm from sealing off completely.

There are cases where the diaphragm fails completely (has a hole), and in those cases it will need to be replaced. You'd need to find either a replacement diaphragm, or an entire valve of the exact same kind so that you may replace it. In the event you ever get inground sprinklers installed, it would be a good idea to ask the installer for an extra valve or two for just such an occasion.
