Quadruple amputee teen, prom queen thanks the mom who stayed

At 17, Natalya “Nat” Manhertz went from a sore throat to septic shock and life support at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. She survived sepsis but lost both arms and both legs.

In this clip, Nat talks about the person who never left her side. Her mom, Thelia, stayed at the hospital every day and did not go to work so she could be there for her daughter.

“My mom, you know, she didn’t miss a day. She was there every single day,” Nat says. “I’ve never like seen my mom cry or anything in my entire life. She’s a toughie.”

Their bond grew through some of the darkest days a family can face as Nat’s life was saved with ECMO and four amputations.

Watch the full 11Alive special to see how Nat, her mom and her friends made it from ICU to prom, graduation and her first steps on prosthetic legs.
