Matthew 6:9-13
"Lord's Prayer," a model prayer given by Jesus to His disciples as a guide for how to approach God in prayer. It's not meant to be a rigid liturgy to be recited mindlessly, but rather a pattern for the themes and attitudes of prayer

**Verse 9: "This, then, is how you should pray: 'Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,'"**

* **"Our Father in heaven"**: This opening sets the tone. It emphasizes:
* **Intimacy ("Father"):** Believers have a personal, loving relationship with God, similar to that between a child and a good father. This was revolutionary in its time, as God was often seen as distant.
* **Community ("Our"):** Prayer is not just individual; it's a communal act among believers. We are part of God's family.
* **Reverence ("in heaven"):** While intimate, God is also transcendent, holy, and sovereign, residing in heaven. This balances intimacy with awe.
* **"hallowed be your name"**:
* "Hallowed" means to make holy, to revere, to set apart as sacred.
* This is the first petition, and it's not a request for God's name to *become* holy (it already is), but rather a plea for God's name to be *treated* as holy, honored, glorified, and respected by everyone on earth, starting with the one praying. It's a desire for God's character and reputation to be recognized and upheld.

**Verse 10: "your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven."**

* **"your kingdom come"**: This is a prayer for the full establishment of God's reign and rule. It has both present and future implications:
* **Present:** For God's kingdom to grow in hearts and lives now, as people submit to His rule.
* **Future:** For the ultimate return of Christ and the full consummation of His kingdom, when all evil will be vanquished and God's perfect rule will be evident.
* **"your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven"**:
* This closely links to the kingdom prayer. It's a desire for God's perfect will, which is always carried out perfectly and immediately in heaven, to be similarly enacted on Earth.
* It's a prayer for obedience to God's commands by humanity and for God's sovereign plan to unfold, even in difficult circumstances. It's also an act of submission, aligning our desires with God's.

**Verse 11: "Give us today our daily bread."**

* **"Give us today our daily bread"**: This shifts from God-centered petitions to human needs.
* "Daily bread" refers to physical sustenance – food, shelter, clothing, and all basic necessities for the day.
* It teaches **dependence on God** for our most fundamental needs, acknowledging that everything we have comes from Him.
* "Today" or "daily" emphasizes trust for the present, discouraging worry about the future, and encouraging humility rather than hoarding.

**Verse 12: "And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors."**

* **"And forgive us our debts"**: "Debts" here refers to sins or transgressions against God. It's a plea for divine forgiveness.
* **"as we also have forgiven our debtors"**: This is a crucial condition. It's not saying we earn forgiveness by forgiving others, but rather that our willingness to forgive others is evidence of a heart that has truly experienced God's forgiveness and understands what it means to be forgiven. Unforgiveness towards others can hinder our own experience of God's grace and forgiveness. Jesus elaborates on this point immediately after the prayer in Matthew 6:14-15.

**Verse 13: "And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one."**

* **"And lead us not into temptation"**: This is a prayer for divine guidance and protection from circumstances that might lead us into sin. It's not that God tempts people to sin (James 1:13), but rather a request for God to guide us away from situations where we might be vulnerable to succumbing to temptation.
* **"but deliver us from the evil one"**: This is a direct plea for protection from Satan ("the evil one") and from the power of evil itself. It acknowledges that there is a spiritual battle and that believers need God's power to overcome the forces of darkness.

The Lord's Prayer is a comprehensive guide to prayer that emphasizes:

* **Worship and Reverence for God:** Prioritizing God's glory, kingdom, and will above all else.
* **Reliance and Dependence on God:** Trusting Him for daily needs, spiritual forgiveness, and protection from evil.
* **Humility and Self-Examination:** Acknowledging our sins and our need for forgiveness.
* **Forgiveness:** Emphasizing the reciprocal nature of forgiveness – that receiving God's forgiveness is tied to our willingness to forgive others.
* **Spiritual Warfare:** Recognizing the reality of temptation and evil, and seeking God's deliverance.

It moves from praise and adoration for God, to petitions for His kingdom to come, to requests for our daily provisions, forgiveness for our sins, and protection from evil, providing a holistic model for a healthy prayer life.
