Episode 0.3: Tristanesque

Hello! This the first of a set of introductory "primer" videos. Rather than being detailed discussions of a particular technique, with accompanying pdfs, these are meant to provide a general overview, and are an informal attempt at talking about chromaticism, sharing some of the underlying principles.

In this episode, we are looking at Richard Wagner's "Tristan" chord, positioning it in 4-note chromatic pitch space, improvising other possibilities, and explaining some of why Barry Harris's methods work so well in "recomposing" this passage

There is an interesting bit of common ground between what Barry Harris teaches and the concepts shared in Dmitri Tymoczko's "Geometry of Music". In these primer videos, I briefly gloss over some of this, and I'll return to it in later episodes. Tymoczko's geometries give us insight into why Barry's methods work so well, by helping us to visualize chromatic pitch space!

If you feel like these primer vids could use some sort of PDF, please let me know, and I'll do my best to provide anything that helps to clarify things.
