This is a tutorial on coloring a horse, using Prismacolor Premier colored pencils for a blood-red bay, from my book The World of Horses. The color palette and directions are also below—

Light Peach (PC927),
Mineral Orange (PC1033)
Burnt Ochre(PC 943)
Chestnut (PC 1081)
BLENDER: Prismacolor Colorless Blender

1. Start with layers of the Light Peach over highlight areas first, overlapping the surrounding mid-tones.
2. Work in a number of layers of Mineral Orange over the entire horse. Follow the direction the coat grows with your strokes as much as you can.
3. Add more layers with Burnt Ochre (a slightly darker tone), working it especially into darker areas, usually the undersides and contours away from the top-light source.
4. Use Chestnut, the darkest color, for outlining and carefully deepening shadow areas, eyes. Accent eyes with a Dark Brown. (I suggest a Dark Gray and a medium Cool Gray for the mane. Hit highlights with Cloud Blue or a Light Gray. Save Black for last if you feel you need it.)
5. Go back in with the two medium coat colors, and the light pencil in lighter areas, to blend everything together, pressing a bit harder to burnish the colors together, and hitting the highlights again with the lightest pencil. Use more Mineral Orange in lighter areas and more Burnt Ochre in darker areas.
6. A Powder or Cloud Blue works well over shadow areas of white blaze.
7. For an even smoother finish try blending with Gamsol or a colorless marker, making sure you have enough layers of pigment on the paper. (Note: blending pencils do not work very well on grayscale, as they can sometimes bring the gray back up.)
8. Optional: You can add even more layers and colors after you blend with the marker or Gamsol if you want to add more detail/color.
