Claudia Cardinale - Encore

It's April 15th! Happy Birthday, Claudia Cardinale!
And I thank my friend Claudia for suggesting this video.

This video showcases CC's award-winning performances. My order is my opinion and I generally did not include non-winning roles except for the first and last films which are sometimes cited. The films are in order (all Italian films with original Italian dubbing):

7. Un maledetto imbroglio (The Facts of Murder)
6. La pelle (The Skin)
5. Claretta (Claretta Petacci)
4. Bello, onesto, emigrato Australia sposerebbe compaesana illibata (A Girl in Australia)
3. La ragazza di Bube (Bebo's Girl)
2. Il giorno della civetta (The Day of the Owl)
1. La storia (History)

CC did not win an award for Un maledetto imbroglio (1959) but I felt that was her first excellent performance. La storia (1986) is a made-for-tv movie so it did not win an award but was well-acclaimed and I think her best performance.

The dialogue is all in Italian (since all movies were here) and I picked scenes that showed a display of CC's expressions, emotions and talent in acting. If you watch closely, she displays a wonderful range of microexpressions, subtle and overlooked (5:00-5:30 and 7:35-8:05). People usually look for accents, strong voice, etc...but her acting is subtle and sensitive.

The David di Donatello Award is the equivalent of the Oscars or Academy Awards, in Italy and CC won Best Actress for Il giorno della civetta and A Girl in Australia.

CC won three Nastro d'Argento (Silver Ribbons) given by Sindacato Nazionale dei Giornalisti Cinematografici Italiani, the second oldest film awards after the Academy Awards. She was Best Supporting Actress for La pella and Best Actor for Bebo's Girl and Claretta. CC also won Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival for Claretta.

CC also won a Golden Orange (lesser Turkish Award) in early 2011 for Sinyora Enrica ile Italyan Olmak, which is a delightful performance perhaps in the top 3-4 but I don't have the movie yet.

Music selected in reverse order Carmen Suite #1 - Intermezzo (for the titles, by George Bizet, Miriam and Philip (Ennio Morricone), Farewell Orso (Ennio Morricone), In Church (by Ennio Morricone), The Deer Hunter (Stanley Myers), Kerim (Ennio Morricone), Live and Die (Ennio Morricone), and Epilogue from the Chronicles of Narnia (Immediate Music). The last piece is quite dramatic and The Deer Hunter played during A Girl in Australia is a lovely melody. The Morricone scores are wonderful pieces from relatively unknown films.

Some film notes: Il maledetto imbrogilio is considered a classic Italian film noir.
La Pelle was directed by Liliana Cavani and also starred Marcello Mastroianni and Burt Lancaster (CC made 5 films with Marcello and 4 with Burt). A Girl in Australia, an excellent but relatively unknown example of commedia all'Italiana
brilliantly paired up CC with comic genius Alberto Sordi. The underrated Luigi Comencini directed CC in two of her best performances in Bebo's Girl and La storia. Pasquale Squittieri (CC's longtime partner) directed the very controversial Claretta, a film about Mussolini's mistress Claretta Petacci which touched many nerves in Italy and strained CC's relationship with Squittieri. The film is largely forgotten and no DVD is available (hence, the mediocre video quality).
