Why Aiming for the Pin Isn’t Always the Smart Play

I used to think aiming straight at the pin gave me the widest margin of error...hit it a little left or right and I’d still land somewhere on the green. But when you factor in the rough and the bunkers, that isn’t always the smartest target.

If a bunker sits tight on one side of the flag, the better miss might actually be in the rough on the opposite side. Leaving yourself a simpler chip or pitch is almost always better than trying to save par out of the sand. Smart aiming is less about hitting the perfect shot and more about avoiding the shot that brings trouble into play.
