Mount Vernon Police Officer Buys Socks for Homeless Shoplifter

May 1st, 2021, Officers Cartwright and Velez were dispatched to a call at a local business (Dollar Tree) for a possible shoplifting. When the Officers arrived, the manager of the store advised the Officers that the person of interest was still inside the store.

Officers Cartwright and Velez then went over to and spoke with the person of interest and realized that he was an undomiciled man who was just looking for socks. Officer Cartwright, after consulting with the manager, decided that the best possible outcome for this incident would be to just buy him the socks he was trying to shoplift and that’s what Officer Cartwright did. Officer Velez also advised the man that he could respond to Police Headquarters and he could get assistance with possibly getting some services he may be in need of. The man thanked them and went on his way.

“This is the norm for our Police Department, not the exception.”. Said Police Commissioner Glenn Scott, “another example of professional policing within the City of Mount Vernon Police Department.
