The Maltese Falcon - Chapter 9: Brigid | Hammett (1929)

Chapter 9 — Brigid

Spade returns home. Brigid is waiting. The version of her story she now tells is closer to the truth than the previous two but still not the truth. He listens and says little. Outside, San Francisco gives off the long quiet sigh of an early-morning city. The chapter is the first in which the novel slows down enough to let you see the shape of the trap that has been built around its detective.

📜 About the public domain
The 1930 novel — Dashiell Hammett's hard-boiled masterpiece, the blueprint for every detective story and film noir that followed — entered the U.S. public domain on January 1, 2026. Free for everyone to read, narrate, illustrate, perform, and adapt.

About Hammett: Samuel Dashiell Hammett (1894–1961) worked as a Pinkerton operative in Baltimore and San Francisco before tuberculosis from his WWI Army service pushed him toward writing. He sold his first stories to the legendary pulp magazine Black Mask in 1922. The Maltese Falcon was his third novel, serialized in Black Mask between September 1929 and January 1930.
