Choosing Kidney-Friendly Cereals:
Serving Size: Understanding the actual serving size is crucial as cereal portions are often smaller than we assume.
Carbohydrates and Fiber: Look for cereals with at least 3 grams of fiber per serving. Higher fiber is beneficial for gut health.
Added Sugars: Aim for cereals with less than 12 grams of added sugar per serving to avoid excessive sugar intake.
Nutrient Considerations:
Potassium: Choose cereals with less than 200 mg of potassium per serving if you need to limit potassium intake.
Phosphorus: Be cautious of cereals with phosphate additives, which are highly absorbable and can increase phosphorus levels. Check for ingredients containing "phos."
Sodium in Cereals:
Sodium can be sneaky in cereals, so always check the label, especially if you're consuming multiple servings.
Hot Cereals:
Healthy Options: Oatmeal, quinoa, barley, and other whole grains can be great choices. Bob's Red Mill and Quaker are recommended brands.
Avoid: Cream of wheat, due to added phosphorus from fortification.
Mixing Cereals and Adding Variety:
Mixing different cereals can help balance nutrients and keep meals interesting.
Consider adding fruits like berries or bananas and toppings like flaxseed or chia seeds to boost fiber and nutrient intake.
