Helene damaged or destroyed thousands of homes in western North Carolina, leaving many families with no good options. One year later, some are still living in temporary housing.

Federal buyouts, where the government buys flooded properties and returns them to open land, have been slow to roll out. Others are choosing to rebuild or elevate their homes using mitigation grants.

Both paths come with paperwork, appraisals, and lengthy approvals. It can take years before the money arrives or a project breaks ground.
