Shyness vs Introversion

It was once believed that 25% of Americans were introverts. New research has shown that, that number can actually be up to 50%. This may be explained by clearer definitions of the difference between an introvert and shyness. Introversion and shyness are two different dimensions. Introversion refers to how much socialization one needs and how tolerant one is of socialization. Introverts do socialize and are happy to do so, but do so less than their extrovert counterparts. They may experience a drained feeling after too much socialization.

Shyness is the fear of interacting with others. The difference between the two is that introversion is not fear, it is the preference of how much socialization one needs. Shyness is a feeling one feels. It is possible to be a shy introvert or a shy extrovert.
