Battle of Buxar: The Fall of Indian Sovereignty

The Battle of Buxar, fought on October 22, 1764, was a decisive conflict between the British East India Company and a coalition of Indian rulers—Mir Qasim (Nawab of Bengal), Shuja-ud-Daula (Nawab of Awadh), and Shah Alam II (Mughal Emperor). The battle took place near Buxar, in present-day Bihar. Despite their combined strength, the Indian alliance was defeated by the well-organized British forces under Major Hector Munro. This victory solidified British control over Bengal and laid the foundation for nearly two centuries of colonial rule in India.
