Rep. Sean Maloney, D-N.Y., questioned Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, an Army officer who works for the National Security Council, and Jennifer Williams, an aide to Vice President Mike Pence, on Nov. 19, in a public hearing as part of the impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump. Maloney asked how Vindman reacted when he heard Gordon Sondland, U.S. ambassador to the European Union, raise the prospect of an investigation into the Bidens. "Frankly, I couldn't believe what I was hearing. There probably was an element of shock" in how America's Ukraine policy was playing out and that "this was likely to have significant implications for our national security." When asked why he decided to come forward, Vindman said, "Because that was my duty." Vindman and Williams both listened in on a July phone call in which Trump asked the president of Ukraine to investigate former vice president and 2020 presidential candidate Joe Biden and his son, Hunter.
