5 YEAR TRANSFORMATION of my FUJI ROADBIKE - cheap bargain to race machine! (full overhaul)

This video is about the 5-year transformation of my Fuji SST Road bike and I'll show the complete overhaul I did to it recently to make it like new again. I bought this bike for a cheap price online and have done many upgrades to it to turn it into the racing machine it is today. This video is basically a trip down memory lane of 5 years of cycling, racing and training out of my hotel in Los Angeles.

**Partners of this Build: **
- Spark Wheel Works offer's all Cycling Fanatics a 30% discount starting on Monday (april 20-2020) through the end of May (2020) on any Spark or ENVE carbon rims built with Chris King hubs. Use the code: CFCK30 on the website https://sparkwheelworks.com/custom-order

The story: As I started to use the bike a lot and more and more serious, it was time for some upgrades. I noticed quite quickly that the Tektro brakes were not powerful enough to slow me down on steep descends at high speed. I got a set of Ultegra brakes to go with the rest of the groupset.

I started racing this bike in 2017. I got in touch with Spark Wheel Works. A wheel building company based in Long beach California. The owner of spark started to support me with race wheels ever since. A nice set of tubular race wheels with a power meter in the rear hub was my second upgrade.
The next thing was a more permanent set of wheels to ride on while not racing. Spark Wheel Works also provided these for me to use.
Eventually, we changed my bottom bracket so I could mount a matching Ultegra crankset. I bought a power meter for that crankset.
I did some small changes after that. Like a different handlebar because I didn’t like the standard one as much, and some new team-color matching bar tape. I was racing for SDBC in that time.
Now it as time to overhaul the bike an make it like new again. I had to transport it back home so I took it apart anyway. I continued by taking all the little bits and pieces off the frame and giving it a proper wash first. Then cleaning all the parts. I put them in a bucket with some degreaser, let it soak for a bit and then really brushed it clean.
I also replaced the plastic internal cable routing sleeve that goes from below the BB to the front derailleur.
I cleaned and re-greased the headset bearings and polished the fork just like I did with the frame. Than I put back the fork with some fresh grease on the bearings.
I completely took apart the rear derailleur to clean it and re grease the bearings of the cage and the pulley wheels.
Then it was time to put back the handlebar and replace the cables. I think this was the trickiest part of the build. It's no rocket science by these internal cables can be a pain in the butt. There are special toolsets you can buy to feed the cables trough that make it easier, but I didn’t have these and with some patience I would get it done… Continuing with the cables of the rear brake that goes through the top tube. There is a nice rubber sleeve that goes around the cable, inside of the tube, that prevents ticking noise.
Next step was to install the crankset.
Putting in the wheels and a chain would make it a rolling bike again. This would allow me to set the derailleur cables and make sure it was all ok before I would start on the bartape and have no access to them anymore.
I had a relatively new chain so I just cleaned it properly and re-installed it to the bike… Setting up the front derr and shifter cables to make it shift… Fine tuning the high and low screw to make it go smooth.
The build was almost done, I had the bartape left and the best had yet to come. The bartape is something you probably get good at when you do it a lot. I just took my time and it worked out nicely. I used Marque Cycling bartape on this bike.
Finally, what I’ve been waiting for to ride for months, the new race wheels from Spark. A 60mm deep section carbon wheels, with tubular Vittoria Corsa tires. Build on Chris King hubs. The transformation is now complete! Let's ride!
