Lecture 6.9: Social roles and social statuses
In our final lecture in this series, we'll wrap up by thinking about some of the individual elements of our socialization through roles, statuses, and expectations attached to both. This lecture covers three examples of statuses which shape how others interact with us and three examples of how roles (the tasks and jobs we fulfill in others' lives) can conflict with our individual experiences. Throughout I'll share lots of examples to help you understand these ideas.
Today's terms:
Statuses
Achieved Status
Ascribed Status
Master Status
Roles
Role strain
Role conflict
Role exit
Fun fact: Dr. Maples has been a longtime player of Dungeons and Dragons. When I saw the word "role" I immediately new I needed more d20s in the video's titlecard. Thanks to Alperen for letting the world use this photo of DnD dice.
