Magnetic Fields Near a Black Hole | The M87 Supermassive Black Hole in Polarized Light

This Zoom webinar took place on March 25, 2021, the day after the new image in polarized light of the supermassive blackhole in the galaxy M87 was revealed by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) Collaboration.

In this seminar Monika Moscibrodzka, Sara Issaoun & Alejandra Jiménez-Rosales, all members of the EHT Collaboration, explain the process of how for the first time the EHT was able to measure polarization at the very edge of a black hole! This M87 image in polarized light is key to understanding how magnetic fields allow the launching of relativistic jets from the "poles" of blackholes. This talk gives an overview on the topic of polarization of light, magnetic fields and how the M87 image was obtained, covering aspects from telescope observations to theoretical modelling.
