Amazon kingfisher * Chloroceryle amazona

The largest of the «green kingfishers» (26 to 28 cm). Thick, black beak. Brilliant dark green upper parts and head. Feathers on head project backwards, forming a small crest. White neck and throat. Rufous-coloured chest. Long, green patches along the side of the chest own towards the legs. The Amazon kingfisher is a common species that lives along the Manu River. They generally perch on low, small trunks observing the water.

ESP.: Martín pescador. Ave de cría residente en las tierras bajas de los trópicos americanos que se distribuye geográficamente desde el sur de México a través de Centroamérica hasta el norte y centro de Argentina. Se piensa que citas de Trinidad son erróneas. Cría en barrancas de arroyos o ríos. El nido es un túnel horizontal hecho en un banco del río, de 1,6 metros de profundidad y 10 centímetros de diámetro. La hembra pone tres, a veces cuatro, huevos de color blanco. Parecido al Martín pescador verde con el cual es simpático en su distribución geográfica.
