In 2003, Steve was diagnosed with cancer (pancreas neuroendrocrine tumor). Months after the diagnosis, he called biographer Walter Isaacson and invited Isaacson to write about him. Steve decided to open up about everything from his feelings about being adopted to his yet-unfulfilled plan to revolutionize television sets. The handpicked biographer, followed Steve through his greatest battles with cancer, on through to the months before his death. Shortly before Steve died, he told Walter that through this book "I wanted my kids to know me." According to the book, "I wasn't always there for them, and I wanted them to know why and to understand what I did."

Walter interviewed more than 100 people, including Steve's friends, family, co-workers and competitors. In more than 40 interviews with Steve, Walter wrote about detailed accounts of Steve's transformative innovations with the Apple II, the Mac, the iPod and the iPhone. He also delves into Steve's youth, his battle with cancer, his relationship with his biological parents, and his straightforward feelings about mediocrity of his competitors...
