STROKE GAMES 2019 – PAVING THE WAY FOR MORE CHAMPIONS

Stroke Games 2019, an amazing event showcasing remarkable abilities and possibilities of life after a crippling stroke, kicked off to a rousing start at the Panasonic National Sports Complex in Shah Alam on October 19. Enthusiastic cheering and clapping echoed through the stadium as contingents from throughout Malaysia marched into the arena with much pomp and colour.

The event was declared open by YABhg Tun Jeanne Abdullah, Patron of the Malaysian Paralympic Council (MPC), who received the Stroke Games torch from YB Hannah Yeoh, Deputy Minister, Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development. Also, in the officiating team were NASAM’s patron YABhg Toh Puan Dato’Seri Hajjah Dr Aishah Ong and Founder Chairman, Janet Yeo.

Before its arrival into the stadium the torch was passed on by a relay of stroke champions who ran, walked or wheelchaired it along the way. The last couple of bearers of the torch included special guests Stuart Milne, CEO of HSBC Bank Malaysia Berhad and Dato’ Wan Hashimi Albakri bin Wan Ahmad Amin Jaffri, Acting Group CEO of Sime Darby Property Berhad. HSBC and Yayasan Sime Darby were the two organisations that were some of the biggest donors of the 2019 Games.

The Games involved more than 800 participants from NASAM’s nine clubs across Malaysia as well as volunteers from corporations, universities and hospitals. Foreign guests included the World Stroke Organisation’s International Development Manager, Sarah Belson. “It is a privilege to represent the World Stroke Organisation (WSO) at NASAM’s 2019 Stroke Games,” said Belson who was a flag bearer during the opening ceremony. “WSO commends NASAM for organising this truly exciting event. We know that low physical activity is a risk factor for stroke and the Stroke Games is therefore important in promoting a healthy lifestyle and demonstrates that there can be life after stroke.

“This year the World Stroke Day campaign theme is 'Don't Be The One' with the key message: Stroke can happen to anyone, anytime and anywhere. However, with the right steps you can reduce your risk.”

The Stroke Games she added is an excellent example of how people can reduce their stroke risk and is a vitally important initiative in Malaysia, where stroke is the third leading cause of death.

The Games kicked off with seated volleyball and hand cycle. There were 25 events of which 19 were individual while six were team challenges.

Each selected sport was modified with safety in mind, taking into consideration factors such as the abilities and stress levels of stroke survivors. The youngest athlete was Lee Yong Xian aged 16, who represented Kuantan in the 300-meters for men. The oldest was Mariya Pillay aged 81, representing Malacca in Hand Cycle for women.
