Hundreds of whales die in Australia's worst mass stranding

Rescuers assisting in Australia’s worst mass whale stranding will be turning their focus from rescuing to retrieving and disposing of 380 dead pilot whales.

A second pod in trouble was discovered in Macquarie Harbour on Tasmania’s west coast during an aerial search, however, it was likely they were part of the same stranding as the initial pod.

Rescuers spent three days attempting to shift hundreds of whales off sandbars, succeeding in freeing about 50 of the long-finned pilot whales.
