Any Major Dude Will Tell You (Steely Dan) Bass Cover by Lars-Erik Dahle

I discovered Steely Dan when I was 15. I had just started playing guitar, and I already had a love for some "old" music, like The Beatles, Queen, Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix - but Steely Dan really blew my mind. At first, they kind of broke my mind. I didn't know what half the instruments were called, I couldn't name most of the chords, and I had no idea what they were singing about most of the time - but there was a certain indescribable quality to it all that hit me in just the right spot.

Now that I'm older, more knowledgeable and more experienced, I can more easily grasp most of the concepts. The harmonies, the lyrical references and quotes, and I'm able to appreciate just what a great achievement in every kind of musical craftsmanship Pretzel Logic truly is. But I still manage from time to time to turn off the analytical part of my brain and just let the music hit me in that same way. And it still feels better than anything else.

It's hard to read from the Pretzel Logic cover who plays on which tunes, but for this one, Wikipedia says Jim Gordon (drums), Jeff "Skunk" Baxter and Dean Parks (guitars), David Paich (keys) and Chuck Rainey on the bass.

Forgive the attempt at humor at the end - there's a Norwegian "yellow pages" type company whose advertising jingle is ripped more or less note for note from the ending of Any Major Dude. Just had to point it out.

As always, recorded at home with my trusty 1974 Precision and Avalon U5. Enjoy!
