Little Hagia Sophia (Küçük Ayasofya) Istanbul
[EN] Little Hagia Sophia (Küçük Ayasofya) Istanbul.
[AR] آيا صوفيا اسطنبول الصغيرة.
[DE] Kleine Hagia Sophia.
[ES] Pequeña Hagia Sophia Estambul.
[IR] ایاصوفیه کوچک استانبول.
[RU] Маленькая Святая София.
This former Greek Eastern Orthodox church was built with the instruction of the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I and his wife Theodora between 532 and 536 under the name of Hagia Sergios and Bachos Church. Despite its Turkish name, it likely was not a model for Hagia Sophia.
The church was transformed into a mosque in 1513, sixty years after the conquest of Constantinople in 1453.
During the time as a church the water pump was used for baptism. After being a mosque it was used for ablution for muslim praying.
And this section is not well known: Underground there was a suffering house (çilehane) for monks. A suffering house is a place for physical and spiritual purification, seclusion and distance from society, accompanied by very limited needs such as salt, oil, bread and water to attain guidance and unite with God.
Ottoman-style window frames were placed in the walls, the doors were reframed, and the building underwent significant change. Structures were added inside, like the pulpit (minbar) and semicircular niche (mihrab), and outside, like the tomb, the 24-room school (madrasah), and the baths, transformed the former church into a complex. These small cell-like rooms have been transformed nowadays into small studios for handicrafts.
