The East Village claims quite a few genesis moments. The Hare Krishna movement began at a tree in Thompkins Square Park. CBGB's launched a genre and dozens of NYC bands including The Ramones, Iggy Pop and Lou Reed. Mid-20th century artists like artist Andy Warhol, poet Allen Ginsberg, and playwright Sam Shepard all called the Village their home.
