Lots of folk tunes are based around just two chords: the tonic and the flattened 7th.
So, if you choose A minor - because that’s quite an easy key on the cello - you could experiment with one bar of A minor arpeggio, followed by one bar of G major arpeggio and keep repeating that pattern - as I do in the video. To keep it structured I’ve chosen a four beat rhythm - 12/8 - and I’m ending on the tonic.
Tunes which have a similar chord structure include What Shall We Do With the Drunken Sailor, Atholl Highlanders and Drowsy Maggie.
