1970 Sebring 12-Hour Grand Prix - Part 5 - The Last Episode

Nino Vaccarella brings in the #21 Ferrari 512 for Andretti to take over. Watch closely as he tries to exit the car because his crew drops the car door on his head. Luckily he was wearing a helmet. I don't think he was aware that Andretti was going to take over. With 20 minutes left in the race the leading Porsche 917 comes into the pits with wheel hub failure. This would be their third hub replacement and it ruins their chance for a win. With the 917 in the pits Andretti overtakes Revson for the lead. Then with just minutes left Andretti roars into the pits very low on fuel. When he reenters the race the McQueen/Revson car is in the lead but just by a few seconds. Andretti pushes the Ferrari to its limits and passes Revson to win by 23 seconds. Watch the celebration at the end of the video. Note how exuberant everyone is around Andretti but not as much around Giunti and Vaccarella. Because of the combination of a close race and so many iconic cars, legendary drivers plus actor Steve McQueen this race is considered by many the best Sebring race ever run. Sadly Giunti would die the following January in a horrific racing accident driving a Ferrari 312P in Buenos Aires. Steve McQueen would take his Sebring car to Le Mans in 1970 to use as a camera car to get film footage for his movie Le Mans. He wanted to drive at Le Mans in 1970 but his insurance company vetoed that idea.
