Watercolor Pencil Rose Shading

When it comes to shading with color, there are three main mixing strategies you can use: Analogous Colors, Complementary Colors, and Neutrals. 🎨

In this time lapse, I’m using Analogous Colors—yellow, orange, and red—to shade my watercolor pencil rose.

🖌️Analogous colors sit next to each other on the color wheel, so they blend naturally while keeping your colors fresh, clean, and vibrant.

If you want to darken an area without muting your colors, analogous colors are a great choice! 🌟

By contrast, shading with Complementary Colors (opposites on the color wheel) or Neutrals (grays, browns, or black) will mute the original color while darkening it.

Complementary Colors create rich, muted, more complex shadows.

Neutrals offer a more direct way to darken — leading to strong contrast and dramatic depth, but at the cost of losing some color intensity.

Each method gives a different feeling—choose the one that fits the mood you want to create!

Which do you find yourself using the most? 🎨🌹
