Today I'm at the 2019 Chicago Auto Show taking a quick look at the 2019 Hyundai Kona Electric.

+ Five-door subcompact crossover SUV
+ Fully electric vehicle. No gas powered engine. You have to plug this one into the wall to charge it up.
+Just released for the first time earlier this year.

+Includes "one-pedal driving", which means that when you lift your foot off the accelerator, the regenerative braking system takes over, using the vehicles momentum to recharge the batteries and slowing the car down. It supposedly feels like you've dropped the vehicle into a lower gear. It's something I'm excited to try out.

+ MSRP: Starting around $36,450 (but your estimated tax credit is $7500)

+ Driving Range: 258 miles
+ MPGe: 132 city, 108 highway, 120 combined

+ Color: Chalk White

+ 0-60 time: 6.4 seconds (according to car and driver)
+ Top Speed: 104 mph
+ Horsepower: 201

+ Battery size: 64 kWh
+ A full re-supply of the battery will take about 10 hours with a 240 volt level 2 charger. If you use the quick charger, you can get up to a 200 mile range with about 75 minutes of charging.

MPGe (miles per gallon equivalent) not a perfect comparison with MPG, but it does give us a way to compare electric vehicles.

Final thoughts: I've only ever driven one fully electric car and...well I wasn't very impressed. But the 2019 Kona has me pretty excited. I would gladly drive this car as my daily driver. It's got everything I like about a vehicle: (1) it's practical; (2) it gets great mileage; and (3) the tech is about the best you can get at this price point. Plus, it looks like it'll be really fun to drive. Sign me up.
