It opens the circuit instantly if it senses you are about to be shocked by your bathroom GFCI outlet and opens the circuit.

When you buy your new ground fault circuit interrupter, be sure to buy a GFCI tester. A proper GFCI tester has the reset button built onto the top of the GFCI tester, so you push button to trip the bathroom GFCI outlet to make sure it is wired correctly. GFCI testers help debug your bathroom GFCI outlet not working.

This bathroom GFCI outlet is not the same as the breaker in your electrical panel, which trips when there is too much current, indicating a short circuit to ground. How to wire GFCI outlet

GFCI outlet wiring is not difficult but be aware of electrical code for bathroom gfci outlet wiring. You need to identify which wire pair entering the GFCI outlet box is the line pair, and which is the load pair.

If your electrical outlet box is metal, while doing GFCI outlet wiring, you must bond the metal box to system ground via the copper wire entering the GFCI outlet box and use a green ground screw to attach that ground wire to the metal box, then the box will be bonded to the system ground. These are bathroom GFCI code requirements.

How to wire GFCI installation 4 wires

If you have 4 wires in the box, 2 white wires and 2 black wires, one pair is the outlet and one pair is the light switch. Each GFCI outlet wiring pair should have its own bare copper ground wire, which you can twist both together, and bond them to the metal outlet box. If your bathroom GFCI outlet box is plastic, you don't need to bond the outlet box to ground.

While doing your GFCI outlet wiring, you still need to twist all bare ground wires together when you have a plastic GFCI outlet box. Now GFCI outlet wiring is a breeze for you.

Bathroom GFCI not working?

If your bathroom GFCI is not working, the GFCI tester we show you in this video will help you debug the circuit and confirm if you have your bathroom GFCI outlet wired correctly. Remember bathroom GFCI outlets are shipped by the manufacturer in the reset state, so you will hook it up, see no power and think the bathroom GFCI is not working.

All you have to do is press in the Bathroom GFI reset button to click on the GFCI outlet, and as long as you wired the outlet correctly, it will turn on, but if you wired it wrong and the GFCI outlet fails to see the proper line voltage and polarity, then it will not click on, and you'll have to rewire the GFCI outlet box the correct way before it will click on. Use your GFCI tester to confirm the outlet is functioning properly.
