Reflections Of My Life Bass Cover
"The world is a bad place
A bad place
A bad place
A terrible place to live
Oh, but I don’t want to die”
“Reflections of My Life” by The Marmalade from their album, “Reflections of The Marmalade” (“Reflections of My Life” in the US), which came out in 1969 (1970 in the US) and featured Graham Knight on bass. The words, the music, and the melody combined to create a masterpiece of majestic melancholy.
Someone suggested this song a while back and I wish I could find the comment. I tried to locate it, but could not. The story, as I remember it, was that when the fellow was a young child he remembered being in the back seat of his Mother’s car and she would play this song over and over again as they drove around. That image really struck me. This song came out in 1969 when the Vietnam War was in the 14th year of its nearly 20 year run. I cannot remember if the boy’s father was away at war or if his memory came from a later time. In my mind, he was. If it was you who made the suggestion, please raise your hand.
This reminded me a bit of when I was young. My Mother raised my two sisters and myself completely on her own and things were never easy. To get right to the point, the main reason I never wanted to have children was because I knew I would never be able to make the sacrifices that my Mother had made for my sisters and me. She worked and she took care of us. There was little time or money left for much else. I used to wonder why she played “How Do You Mend a Broken Heart”, (such an obviously sad song) by the Bee Gees over and over again, but I guess I always knew.
Initially, I recorded this cover using another bass, but redid it immediately after with this one. For some reason I thought the “look” of this bass suited the song better. It doesn’t sound too bad either. It’s a, fairly recent, Guild Starfire which is considered short-scale @ 30 3/4”.
Here’s another unlisted version on played on the other Guild - https://youtu.be/-iSi06XSEP0
