Selective Catalytic Reduction | Skill-Lync
The pollution created by the automobiles increases day by day and the emission norms are becoming more stringent. New technologies are being evolved to curb pollution.
In this video, we have explained one of such emission control technologies - ‘Selective Catalytic Reduction’.
Selective Catalytic Reduction is an exhaust after-treatment process that controls the emission of NOx.
This technology was first used in Thermal Power Plants. They are also used in Waste Plants, Incinerators and Gas Turbines. Since the mid-2000s, it has been used in mobile diesel engines as well.
SCR reactor consists of a honeycomb structure coated with catalysts like Vanadium Oxide, Titanium Oxide, etc., Urea is added into the exhaust stream through a dynamic urea dosage system. This system ensures the correct amount of urea supply according to the requirement.
The supplied urea will get hydrolysed into ammonia. This ammonia reacts with the NOx in the exhaust gas with the help of catalysts and converts it into nitrogen gas.
Thus, the emission of NOx can be controlled.
The SCR can reduce the NOx emissions up to 90% which is a major advantage. Meanwhile, the onboard urea storage tank and periodical filling urea demand high cost.
That’s all about the SCR.
