The Story of Janet Jackson's 80s Hit What Have You Done For Me Lately | Pop Fix | Professor of Rock

What Have You Done for Me Lately" by Legend, Superstar and in my opinion the Queen of Pop Miss Jackson to be precise. Janet Jackson, the opening shot from her multi-platinum pop juggernaut Control, with the Legendary and I mean legendary duo of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis as co-producers and co-writers. It was a recipe for pop perfection. The story of this 1986 #4 hit is told be Jimmy Jam.

In this week the King of Ballet Mikhail Baryshnikov, who defected from the Soviet Union years before, became a U.S. Citizen.

Even better the top 7 song on the billboard hot 100 are as follows: Take Me Home by Phil Collins at #7, Your Love by the Outfield at #6, Live to Tell by Madonna at 5 What Have You done For Me Lately at 4, Why Can't This Be Love by Van Halen , West End Girls by the Pet shop Boys at the 2 spot and The Greatest Love of All by Whitney Houston at #1. I look at that top 7 and am absolutely awe struck. Every one of those songs are pretty classic. When is the last time the world has seen something like that in the top 40? The 80s were just phenomenal. Look at the variety, all genres represented. All incredible artists that still resonate today . It's actually pretty mind boggling when you really think about it Today we go in depth on one of the songs in that heavenly 7. I wear this shirt again in tribute:

In the 80s and 90s she was almost unrivaled pop wise. This song is a great example of that. It has like four different melodies and each one could be a hit song by itself. I mean think about the bridge: It's Just as strong as the Chorus. The song received a nomination for Best Rhythm & Blues Song at the 1987 Grammy Awards. As mentioned the song peaked at #4 on the hot 100 here in the US and crossed many genres, as it hit #1 on the R&B charts, as well as #2 on Dance Club songs, Outside America it hit #1 in the Netherlands and hit the top ten in Germany, Switzerland and the UK. The music video was also very iconic, directed by Brian Jones and Piers Ashworth and choreographed by future star Paula Abdul who is also in the video: This is an undeniable pop classic. I love Janet's vocals on this And her take no bs attitude tough talk:

I was extremely fortunate to talk with Jimmy Jam about this album and song here its the story of the song straight from him. Before we get into the interview I want to quickly mention our sponsor Zenni Eyewear who help our mission of keeping the music alive.
