myiasis

The parasitic infestation of the body of a live animal by fly larvae (maggots) which grow inside the host while feeding on its tissue.

The infection usually occurs in tropical and subtropical areas. There are several ways for flies to transmit their larvae to people. Some flies attach their eggs to mosquitoes and wait for mosquitoes to bite people. Their larvae then enter these bites. Other flies' larvae burrow into skin.

Wohlfahrtia magnifica (spotted flesh fly, screwworm fly) is a species of fly belonging to the family Sarcophagidae. Its larvae cause myiasis in mammals, mainly in sheep, and also rarely in humans. In humans, they may infest the ear, eye, mouth, or nose, damaging the living tissues. They may also infest open wounds, including after surgery.
