KATK - Biography
Kyla and the Keys are a post punk alternative pop project put together by
British-Belgian couple Kyla Bailey and David Goffin. Their latest album Opposite Lock is out and might appeal to several generations of listeners. Musically rooted in the couple's formative years of the 80s but refusing to fall for cheap nostalgia, KATK just play the music they'd like to hear on the radio and they like a lot of different things indeed.
It has been said that this is an album of mature content and it certainly is the case. KATK aren't young and they aren't hiding it, if anything they're embracing it. Free from fashions or pressure they present their true selves.

Based on jam sessions organised by David with Belgian friends Philippe Depireux on drums (of Belgian band Jo Lemaire+Flouze, once collaborators of Mancunian legend Vini Reilly), Philippe 'Pitou' Mercier on guitar (and late-in-life saxophone debutant José 'Titi' Noël added to the mix as he was passing by), KATK's music feels real and organic because it was created by people having fun. Recorded over a week in Belgium the jam sessions produced a quantity of ideas that were all recorded live.
David then spent time in the studio putting things together with the creative freedom allowed by modern production techniques.

Kyla says her lyrics, inspired by the mood of the pieces, are partly autobiographical. They celebrate the concept of Change. When you lose direction and are drifting in full opposite lock with little hope of regaining control (I Feel Good, In Your Mind). With humour when your body changes against your own will (Hot Hot Hot). When you take your future in your own hands (All Eyes on Kay) or when memories carry the scar of past traumatic changes (Having Fun). This is a woman writing about life at 50, and why it should be celebrated.
The album is available on all streaming platforms and available as a limited edition CD.

Kyla and the Keys est un projet pop alternatif post punk créé par le couple
anglo-belge Kyla Bailey et David Goffin. Leur dernier album Opposite Lock est sorti et a tout pour plaire à plusieurs générations d'auditeurs. Musicalement enraciné dans les années de formation du couple, les 80s mais refusant de tomber dans une nostalgie bon marché, KATK joue simplement la musique qu'ils aimeraient entendre à la radio et il est clair qu’ils aiment beaucoup de choses variées.
On a dit qu'il s'agissait d'un album au contenu mûr et c'est certainement vrai. Les membres de KATK ne sont pas jeunes et ils ne le cachent pas. Libérés des modes et des pressions du jeunisme, ils se présentent tel qu’ils sont.
La musique de KATK a démarré par des jams organisées par David et ses amis belges Gembloutois Philippe Depireux (Jo Lemaire+Flouze) et Philippe 'Pitou' Mercier à la guitare (augmentés du saxophoniste José 'Titi' Noël). Si le produit final sonne vrai et organique, c’est qu’il est le résultat d’une collaboration entre gens qui prennent plaisir. Enregistrées pendant une semaine en Belgique, les jams ont donné naissance à une quantité d'idées qui ont toutes été enregistrées en jeu direct. David a ensuite passé du temps en studio à assembler les choses avec la liberté créative permise par les techniques de production modernes.
Kyla explique que ses paroles, inspirées par l'ambiance des musiques, sont en partie autobiographiques. Elles célèbrent le concept du Changement. Comme quand vous perdez le contrôle et partez dans un grand contre-braquage, avec peu d'espoir d’une issue positive (I Feel Good, In Your Mind). Avec humour, quand le corps se transforme contre notre volonté (Hot Hot Hot), avec espoir, lorsqu'on prend son avenir en main (All Eyes on Kay) ou encore quand les souvenirs portent la cicatrice de changements traumatiques du passé (Having Fun). C'est l’écriture d’une femme de 50 ans qui célèbre les tournants de la vie.
