The Forefront of Electronic Music Innovation: Raster-Noton
A condensed (not comprehensive) introduction to the history of the Raster-Noton label, including its roots as Rastermusik (Olaf Bender and Frank Bretschneider) and noton archiv für ton und nichtton (Carsten Nicolai).
0:00 History and Themes from 1988-1999
10:00 1999-Present
12:25 Books, SD Cards, and other Nicht Ton
In this episode we'll cover the basics of the Raster-Noton label, famous for its minimalistic and technologically advanced approach to experimental electronic music, sometimes referred to as part of the "clicks and cuts" genre. We'll start by introducing Olaf Bender (Byetone) and Frank Bretschneider (Komet) and their founding of Rastermusik, and talk a bit about their influences in terms of both musical style and visual direction. We'll also give a short introduction to Carsten Nicolai (also known as Alva Noto and just Noto). Next we talk through how the label progressed over time, and how it split back into two labels in 2017. There will be some recommendations for great introductory albums on the label to start with. Finally, we'll do a bit of show-and-tell with the Raster-Noton Source Book 1 and talk about some of the other non-music releases included in the catalogue. During this, we'll be listening to music from Byetone, Alva Noto, Kangding Ray, and Ryuichi Sakamoto.
