The Curious Case of the Multilateral Environmental Agreements I Rafay Alam I RSIL l Qanoondan

Mr. Ahmad Rafay Alam is an environmental lawyer and activist working in Pakistan. After a decade of practice, ending as Senior Associate to Dr. Parvez Hassan (YLS 1963), in 2013 Rafay merged his experience in civil, corporate and constitutional law with his passion for public interest environment litigation and co-founded Saleem, Alam & Co., a law firm that specializes in energy, water, natural resources, and urban infrastructure.

Mr. Rafay is also a regular op-ed columnist on environment, local government and urban issues and has contributed to The News, The Express Tribune, The Friday Times and has been published in Dawn, The Nation, The Daily Times, Tehlka, Vogue India and Libas International.

Globalization and urbanization often come with a heavy price, i.e. at the cost of environmental degradation. As a result, environmental law is becoming an increasingly important subject of regulation in societies. Our team at RSIL has found a visible gap of information and initiative in the minds of individuals, businesses and the government about the significance of environmental law. After a thorough research, the team found out that people have little to no knowledge of the implications of the Pakistan Environment Protection Act of 1997 and the possible solutions to environmental problems faced by society. Now, in order to bridge that gap, RSIL is planning to host a one-day event on environmental law. This event entails an extensive panel discussion with members from the judiciary, the non-governmental organizations working towards the environment, legal consultancies and industries. It aims to provide a holistic approach that fosters pragmatic problem-solving for the current environmental issues facing Pakistan.
This event on environmental Law was organized by Research Society of International Law at Lahore Office.
