Throwback: How Western support shaped Iraq's WMD program, according to Gulf War veteran !?
Gulf War veteran Ken O’Keefe alleges the US and Britain provided Saddam Hussein's regime with biological and chemical weapons capabilities during the 1980s - arms that were later used against Kurdish and Iranian civilians.

'They kept backing him with economic and military aid even after his most egregious atrocities,' O'Keefe stated.

✲ Why this matters: Throughout the Iran-Iraq War, Washington and London viewed Baghdad as a strategic counterweight to revolutionary Iran. Declassified CIA and State Department files confirm the transfer of dual-use technology, agricultural chemicals, and battlefield intelligence to Iraq b/w 1982-1988. The 1988 Halabja chemical attack, which killed thousands of Kurds, occurred while this support continued.

✲ Contradiction: US policy shifted only after Iraq's 1990 invasion of Kuwait. The same weapons programs once quietly enabled became the primary justification for the 1991 Gulf War and the 2003 invasion.

[The case remains a core example in debates over blowback, realpolitik, and how strategic alliances can outlive their moral justification.]
