Taking back Highland Avenue: National City embraces lowriders

More than 25 years after the city of National City banned cruising, the pastime returned to the South Bay city last month (on Sept. 21) as part of an inaugural car show at Kimball Park. Participants cruised down Highland Avenue in their treasured lowriders — customized cars fitted with hydraulic systems.

The sights were reminiscent of what the city’s thoroughfare often looked like on weekends before the city, concerned about crime and traffic congestion, outlawed cruising in 1992.
