What if Extinction is NOT Forever?
March 6, 2014 - Deep Time, Global Change and YOU lecture series: What if Extinction is NOT Forever?
Presented by Beth Shapiro, University of California, Santa Cruz
Herds of mammoths roaming the tundra or a sabre-toothed cat skulking out back. Are these the dramatic scenes of our future? Fortunately, the answer is still no - not soon, anyway. Science is, however, inching closer & closer to being able to bring extinct animals back to life. But, do we really want them to be brought back? Dr. Shapiro will outline the science to make de-extinction possible, & consider the environmental & ethical consequence of de-extinction.
