So in my last video, where I took a trip up to the Lancelin Sand Dunes, I captured my final image using focus stacking where I took a series of photos with the camera focused at different points throughout the scene. Now I was asked by a few people in the comments if I could show how I merged the series of shots together to get the final image, so that’s what we’re going to do in this video.
Now the reason you might consider using focus stacking is to increase your Depth of Field (the region of the image that is in focus). We know that you can do this by increasing your f-stop to f14 or f16, much higher than that and you could introduce diffusion which is an optical effect due to the light traveling through such a small aperture it’s diffracted and the result is you loss a little detail and your image can become soft.
So another way to ensure your image is sharp right the way through the scene is to take a series of photos with the focus point of the camera placed at various positions throughout the scene and then blend them together in Post-Processing using the sharpest parts of each photo for the final image.
If you have a D850, one of the features Nikon added to this camera is focus stacking where you can set the number of photos you want to take and the camera will automatically work out where to focus and will take the shots for you. But I haven’t upgraded to the D850 and as you can see it’s not very difficult to focus stack a scene manually. Regardless of whether you have a D850 or you focus stack with another camera, you still have to go through the process of merging the photos in post…so let’s start!
As you can see it’s very easy to focus stack an image and you can give your images that extra little punch as it’s sharp right the way through. I don’t use the technique all the time, but in this situation where the texture and ripples in the sand and simple ’s’ curve in the dune were the main focus of the image, it was a great opportunity to show you what’s involved.
