World War I: The Spark That Set the World on Fire

At the dawn of the 20th century, Europe stood on the brink of disaster. Powerful empires armed themselves, alliances tightened, and nationalism surged across the continent. All it needed was a single spark.

That spark came on June 28, 1914, in Sarajevo, when Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated by Gavrilo Princip. Within weeks, alliances dragged Europe into a conflict that would become known as World War I.

From the brutal trench warfare of the Western Front to the devastating battles of Battle of the Somme and Battle of Verdun, the war introduced terrifying new weapons — machine guns, poison gas, tanks, and airplanes — changing warfare forever.

The conflict spread beyond Europe, drawing in colonies and global powers. In 1917, the United States entered the war as Russia withdrew amid revolution. After four devastating years, an armistice was signed on November 11, 1918.

But peace came at a terrible cost: over 16 million dead and entire empires collapsed. The Treaty of Versailles reshaped Europe — and planted the seeds for World War II.
