Flamborough Head Virtual Geology Field Trip - Part 1

The first leg in a series of four virtual geology field trips around Flamborough Head, east Yorkshire. The starting point is at Speeton where there are shoreline and cliff exposures of the Lower Cretaceous foundations of the headland and the overlying Upper Cretaceous Chalk Group. A visit to the cliff tops on Bempton’s RSPB reserve takes us up the stratigraphic column to a flint-rich section of the Chalk Group. Viewing platforms and the cliff-top path provide opportunities to study breeding sea birds such as puffin and gannet as well as the geology and geomorphology resulting from the marine erosion of chalk and its overlying glacial till. The finale is a virtual transfer to a waiting boat that provides an alternative view of the cliffs at Staple Newk.
