Taranas are an important and permanent part of a Kathak repertoire. A tarana is a musical genre created by the famous 13th century Sufi poet Amir Khusro. The dancer presents the essence of melody and rhythm through complex footwork, intricate geometric shapes and elegance.

Dutch Indu Panday has been dancing since she was seven and is one of the few dancers who is specialised in both the South Indian classical dance Bharatanatyam and the North Indian classical dance Kathak.
The Kathak differs from other Indian dance styles because of its natural shape. The audience is led to the experience of an emotion.
Emotions can be expressed in different ways: use of body and facial expressions, speech and song, costume and make-up.
