Hypersexuality is more common than people realize and it's extremely important to know the signs of "hypersexual behavior." It can have a HUGE impact on our decision making and especially our relationships. In fact, the average percentage of people who experience "Hypersexual Bipolar Mania" is around 57%. This video covers a broad spectrum of hypersexuality for anyone who wants to learn a lot about it - (not just those who have Bipolar Disorder).
When you were first diagnosed and started talking to doctors about Bipolar Disorder, chances are you were never told about "hypersexuality." I've seen some great doctors over the years and not a single one mentioned this to me.
An overwhelming number of people have asked me to make a video talking about this. Most have been the partners of someone who has Bipolar Disorder. Part of the problem is how uncomfortable people are with discussing Mental Illness and especially sex. Even in relationships, couples don't tend to talk about hypersexuality unless there's a big problem.
For partners who cheat, the often don't talk about it until they get caught. For partners who are getting "lots of great sex," they might not see it as a problem until their partner's mania is completely out of control.
Hypersexuality, just like Bipolar Disorder is "cyclic" - meaning it can come and go in cycles. There are usually distinct patterns of behavior or signs when someone starts to get hypersexual. Learning to identify these signs can be used as another TOOL to know when Bipolar symptoms are starting. Being overly-sexual can be a sign that mania is here. Having no interest in sex could mean that depression is on the horizon. It's up to each person to learn what hypersexuality means for them.
I'd love to hear what you think in the comments below and if you have any questions, I'll always do my best to help!
