Okay so, let’s get into it! Now, I’m one of the rare breeds… I actually advocate poetry rhyming! I think it gives poetry an edge and helps take it to an elevated level, which in my humble opinion is what poetry should be all about! Here’s some tips for doing so:

Tip 1: The first thing you’ll want to consider is the rhyme scheme and metre of your poem. Now simply put, a rhyme scheme is just determining which lines within your poem are going to rhyme with each other. For example, if you choose the rhyme scheme “ABCB” the third and fourth lines in each stanza will rhyme, while the first and third do not. I like to use “ABCB” as an example because I find that it is the easiest to write for beginners and allows you to incorporate rhymes in a way that is not too overwhelming. Metre, on the other hand, is just the rhythm that the poem follows, and makes your poem sound lyrical and melodic. To establish the metre of your poem, you need to take into account the rhyme scheme as well as the length of your lines and which sounds are being stressed. I like to draw a simple diagram before I begin my rhymed poems that helps me visualize what the poem will sound like (insert demonstration).

Tip 2: Keep a dictionary, thesaurus, one of my secret companions too: The Poet’s Handbook, which actually would be a great little side companion to this video! Not only does it give you plenty of rhymes for all types of vowels but there are a few useful general poetry writing tips too. And of course googling what rhymes helps too when pressed for time! A short tip for you, but by no means less valuable. Get yourself one of these if you can! :)

Tip 3: So by this point you should not only have a rhyme scheme and metre down, but also a plethora of potential rhymes and words to use at your disposal. But the question remains, which word do you actually choose? The first thing I like to consider is whether these words will create a near rhyme or a perfect rhyme. Perfect rhymes can sound a little more satisfying, but they can also give your poem a very up beat ‘sing-songy’ feel which might not be what you are going for. Near rhymes on the other hand may be less satisfying, but they can give your poem a more sophisticated, rough around the edges feel. The next thing I like to consider is how obvious or cliche this rhyme is. Try steering clear of rhymes that people have heard too many times, and instead opt for something a little more original. But with that all being said, the last thing you should keep in mind is whether or not the words you choose actually serve the meaning of the poem, and that you aren’t just including them for the sake of the rhyme. Make sure that your poem actually makes sense, and the rhymes do not distract from the meaning!
