Exemption on home heating oil “not undermining” carbon pricing policy, Freeland says | FULL

Canada's Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland said Tuesday that the exemption on home heating oil from the price of carbon was “not undermining” the overall policy, despite criticism from premiers and the federal opposition.

Freeland said the exemption would accelerate the transition from home heating oil to heat pumps, allowing those who may not have had the cash flow to make the change.

“This is going to accelerate the transition and (is) going to make life more affordable for Canadians,” she said.

The carbon pricing exemption would primarily benefit residents in Atlantic Canada, where home heating oil is still used by almost one-third of households in the region. Premiers of other provinces as a result have called the program unfair.

Freeland also announced Tuesday that she would convene a meeting of provincial and territorial finance ministers to discuss Alberta’s proposal to exit the Canada Pension Plan (CPP).
